About Viceroy of Zhili's Office, Baoding
The only complete provincial-level Qing government compound to survive in China, built in 1729 and used by successive viceroys of Zhili, the province around Beijing, until the end of the Qing. Five courtyards run along a central axis from the main gate through the ceremonial gate, main hall and second hall to the residential quarters. Seventy-four men held the post here over 99 terms, among them Zeng Guofan and Li Hongzhang, and the compound is now the Zhili Governor-General's Office Museum.
