About Guangxiao Temple

Guangxiao Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Guangzhou, traditionally founded on the estate of the scholar Yu Fan after his death in 233, and is now the seat of the Guangdong Buddhist Association. Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, was tonsured here under a bodhi tree in 676, and a small brick pagoda said to hold his hair still stands. The grounds also keep two iron pagodas cast for the Southern Han court in the 960s, of which the eastern one survives intact.
