About Temple of the Six Banyan Trees

Founded in 537 to house Buddhist relics brought from Cambodia, the temple takes its name from the characters 'Six Banyans' that Su Dongpo wrote for it in 1100, still hung over the gate. Its landmark is the octagonal Flower Pagoda, first raised in 1097 and rebuilt in 1373, crowned by a Yuan-dynasty bronze spire pillar cast with more than a thousand small Buddha figures. It remains an active temple, one of the four great Buddhist monasteries of old Guangzhou.
