About Huaisheng Mosque and Guangta Minaret
Traditionally said to have been founded in 627 by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, a companion of the Prophet, the Huaisheng Mosque is the main mosque of Guangzhou and one of the oldest in China, although historians place its origins later in the Tang or Song period. Its plain round brick minaret, the Guangta or 'light tower', is said to have carried a lamp to guide ships when the river ran close by, and the present prayer hall and courtyards follow a rebuilding of 1695.
