About Temple of the Five Immortals

This former Taoist temple honours the five immortals who, in the legend behind Guangzhou's nickname 'City of Rams', rode in on rams bearing ears of rice; it has stood on this site since 1377. Survivors include the Ming rear hall, one of the few intact Ming buildings in the city, and the Lingnan First Tower, a gate tower of red sandstone and timber housing a great bronze bell cast in 1378. A hollow in the rock by the gate is known as the immortals' footprint, and the Nanyue Ancestral Worthies Hall next door, opened in 2017, presents historical figures of Guangdong.
