About Chik Kwai Study Hall

Chik Kwai Study Hall was built before 1899 by Lai Kam-tai of the Lai clan in Pat Heung, as a place for both ancestor worship and the education of young clansmen. It is a typical two-hall, one-courtyard Qing building with a carved wooden altar for the clan's ancestral tablets, and the Antiquities and Monuments Office calls it one of the finest traditional study halls remaining in the Yuen Long area, for its woodcarvings, plaster mouldings and murals. After the Second World War it housed classrooms and then a kindergarten, which closed in the early 1970s.
