About Fan Sin Temple and Wun Yiu Kilns

Fan Sin Temple is the main temple of Sheung Wun Yiu and Ha Wun Yiu, villages that made blue-and-white porcelain from the Ming dynasty until the kilns closed in 1932. It honours Fan Tai Sin Sze, patron saint of potters, a dedication the Antiquities and Monuments Office says is unique in Hong Kong; a plaque in the main hall dates from 1790, and the temple was fully restored in 2000 after a fire in the 1970s. The remains of the Wun Yiu pottery kilns in Sheung Wun Yiu are a separate declared monument, where excavations in 1995 and 1999 found clay pits, water-mills, an animal-driven grinder, soaking tanks and dragon kilns.
